Critical tests of non-English domain names will start in December following a promise by ICANN to have an internationalised domain name system up and running by the end of next year.

ICANN president Paul Twomey told a global internet governance forum in Athens last week that the organisation would not be railroaded into introducing double-byte domains before they were ready.

The Internet Society's motto, for many years, has been "The Internet is for Everyone." As the Internet continues to penetrate into every corner of human society and of the economy, members of the Internet Society (ISOC) have a responsibility to demonstrate the standards of behaviour that are appropriate to continued growth and beneficial use of the Internet. People designing, building and operating Internet services, or simply using the Internet as a major tool in everyday life and work, need to adopt standards of behaviour like those of any profession. We build bridges and buildings to stand for at least 100 years, resisting natural and man-made disasters as far as possible, and to be useful for applications beyond their original design. Despite its rate of change, the Internet should be the same.

New ICANN/DoC Agreement PDF Print E-mail
ISOC welcomes the agreement announced today between the United States Department of Commerce (USDoC) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The agreement ensures continued stability of the Internet by setting the foundation for an orderly transition of the Domain Name System (DNS) to the private sector. It also demonstrates clear support for ICANN and the role it plays in coordinating those activities related to the Internet's system of unique identifiers.

The success of the Internet lies in the fact that it is a "network of networks" characterized by distributed management and a minimum of regulation. Both operational and governance mechanisms are implemented as locally and as redundantly as possible. This principle has not only enabled the Internet to grow rapidly and to serve millions of users, it has also prevented any one entity or government from "owning" or "controlling" the Internet.
